"I got the call today I didn't want to hear, but I knew that it would come." -- Don Henley, The Heart of the Matter
Yes, the inevitable has occurred. No, not that I've resorted to quoting Don Henley on my blog, something much, much more disturbing.
At work today, my cell phone rang, and the word "daycare" popped up on the screen. I knew what it was about before I answered. Anthony, who was fine when I'd dropped him off, was running a slight fever, and I needed to pick him up. Despite a touch of spousal confusion -- Brandon also hit the road to come to Anthony's rescue, thinking I would be in a meeting -- I was on my way within minutes. Fortunately, my boss was very understanding, and I grabbed some work to do at home and hit the road. On my way to get Anthony, I called the pediatrician, only to learn the office I usually go to was closing early, and I'd need to get the little guy there within 40 minutes if I wanted him to be seen.
Now, on a good day -- and how many of those are there on the Miami roads? -- Anthony's daycare is 30 minutes away from where I work. The doctor's office, then, is 5-10 minutes from the daycare. Somehow, I was in the doc's waiting room in half an hour, counting a five-minute car seat-induced stagger from vehicle to building. My apologies to the man in the gray Dodge Ram pickup...I didn't mean to wake you up from your nap at that green light.
Anyway, upon reaching the exam room, Anthony pulled that old "now that I'm at the doctor's office, I'm perfectly fine" trick. No fever, plenty of smiles for the nurses, not even a little token fussiness. Still, the doctor did say his lungs sounded "a little congested," which of course totally freaked me out.
In any case, Anthony seems to be doing OK (faking it to get out of school already??) We've taken his temperature a couple more times, and it's normal. He took a long late-afternoon nap, ate several times with his usual gusto, and is currently hanging out peacefully on my lap. And he even agreed to star in the above video, in which he demonstrates both his ability to reach for toys and his intense fascination with his little feet.
Oh, and Anthony got measured again, since he was at the doctor's office anyway. He's a full two feet long, boasts a 16-inch noggin and tips the scales at 15 pounds -- more than double his birth weight. That's our excuse for the outfit he's wearing in the video. It's a "baby's first Halloween" sleeper, but we're afraid the big guy won't be able to squeeze into it in another month.

Yeah, kids will do that to you. This is a little early, but Dr's offices seem to do the trick. First time sick but not the last time. At least it wasn't a real serious illness. Maybe caught just in time. You know your day care people are on their toes and don't ignore it when things aren't just right. I enjoyed the video and Brandon did real good. So did Anthony. He sure was concentrating on those keys. Keys are always favorites so glad to see he has some as no home with little babies should be without them. He looks cute in his Halloween pjs. Bradley was wearing his already, too. Why not. Gotta get some good out of them. Sure can't wear them next year. Anthony is getting to be such a big boy. Doesn't surprise me that he weighs that much and is that tall. Oh, Kelly, what did you do to that poor guy in the gray Dodge Ram pickup? Love you all. Shirley
I am glad Anthony is feeling well. Anthony just wanted to get home early and play with his daddy.
I'm so glad you're OK!!
I know what it's like because unfortunately I get sick a lot. Except for one vicious cold back in July my fevers are always very minor and they rarely last more than day or two, but my Mommy and Daddy (mostly Mommy) are frustrated about having to stay home sometimes!
Can't wait to see you on Saturday
Love, Lyla
