Lessons learned from the early days of motherhood

I (Kelly) am so lame. I railed for so long against blogs, but motherhood has changed my perspective on life. Or maybe I'm delirious from 8 hours of combined sleep in the past 5 days. Anyway, here goes:

After a rough night Monday (Anthony screaming bloody murder until 3 a.m. before finally going to sleep) we learned a couple valuable things about our boy, and Tuesday night went much better. Anthony slept great from about 8:30 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. (save for your expected bihourly feedings and diaper changes-cut the kid some slack, he's only 4 days old).

First, Anthony prefers footie sleepers to being swaddled, and mom and dad agree! Even though we went through three of said sleepers last night thanks to wetness induced by incontinance or, more likely, inCOMPETENT diapering, he was warm and cozy in his series of sleepers. Besides, we were equally incompetent at the swaddling thing, as lil' Houdini can squirm his way out of a straight jacket and 4 chains. In any case, I think it's more likely we'll learn how to properly change a diaper than to successfully treat our son like an origami project.

For the second lesson, we finally found out where Anthony likes to sleep. $200 for a crib. $150 for an Eddie Bauer bassinet. $35 for a sleep positioner. $75 for a Graco Pack n Play. Figuring out that the little rugrat likes to sleep on his mom's stomach sans any sleeping gear---priceless.

So, along with providing cafeteria services, I will provide mattress services as well. At worst, it's over-indulgent bad parenting. At best, it's sweet blissful rest time.

Here's some video for your enjoyment.

The thinker? Anthony rests his weary head on his hand recovering from a full hour of being awake:

Anthony journeys to the far corners of the earth, or at least to the end of the driveway of our condo complex on his first walk:

A truly rare find, only the greatest of videographers can capture. On par with video of the Giant Panda mating in its natural habitat. You guessed it, Brandon captured Anthony awake during daylight hours!

Oh,oh. On Mommy's tummy, huh? Of course he likes it there better. Well, good luck in getting him to make the change to sleeping elsewhere. You are walking pretty lamely, Kelly. Not so great when you have to carry Anthony or do anything for that matter. Hope that doesn't last too long. Anthony is a doll. You are enjoying him, I can tell. Love you all. Shirley

Hi Kelly! I enjoyed your first post to the blog! I like watching the videos you guys have been posting, although I can't listen to the sound at work so I can only watch... but I'm getting the gist of things. I like Anthony's "Thinker" pose! :-)

Oh hurray, new video to watch! I am choosing your blog over the Bold and the Beautiful! Kelly, your commentary was very entertaining! But as your mom, I must advise, go lay down on the sofa, elevate your legs, put ice on your hip, and have a cup of tea!! (Well, now that you're a mom, you know how it is, we can't stand to see our children in pain!) Love you, Mom

So many things to say...
1. Kelly, you MUST take care of yourself. Get that hip fixed up ASAP, 'cause when daddy goes back to work (I know it seems years away, but it will happen eventually) and you are flying solo, you'll need both hips (and a few extra arms, so you might want to ask the doctor if he/she could attach a few).
2. It's good that Anthony can appreciate ESPN, particularly PTI, it appears he will not be ostracized by dear old dad.
3. Good for you for letting him sleep on you so you can get some rest. The "co-sleeping" thing is every mom's little secret. At first I was so nervous to tell anyone where Harper slept, but every mom I talk to, pretty much, has her little one in bed with her. You've got to do what works now, and if that is working, GOOD FOR YOU!
4. You guys are doing great! We can't wait to see you! Can you tell I'm excited... I can't shut up... Even on the blog.
Wishing you sweet dreams! Let us know if you need anything!

Love,
Amanda

Co-sleeping was the only way I got any sleep for Mia's first months of life. I swear, Amanda's right - it is every mom's secret. And, we really didn't have a hard time at all moving Mia into her crib (I had a hard time, but that is another story). As my mom always told me, pretty soon, they will want nothing to do with you, so enjoy it while it lasts :)

Really, sleep as much as you can! And take good care of yourself!

We are enjoying the blog so much and love watching the videos over and over of our precious little grandson.
Counting the days until I can see him, hold him, and kiss his sweet little head dozens of times!!!

Love to all three of you,
Grandma Char

Hey guys,
What cute pictures and videos! If you want a good swaddling technique, get the book and/or video "The Happiest Baby on the Block." We both strongly recommend the book. Tessa slept on my chest for a couple months. She got too big eventually, but those are some of the most precious moments. Anyway, have fun at being new parents! Thanks for the updates!

Ryan, Candace, and Tessa

P.S. You will eventually get some sleep...just wait a few months.

He really looks like Brandon in ''the thinker.'' Maybe Brandon should sleep in and send Anthony to court in his place for a morning. Can't wait to meet him - Amy
